HD movies on Putlocker: 720p, 1080p and 4K

Every title on Putlocker is an HD release, and Watch now opens it on a service that plays it in 720p, 1080p or 4K depending on the title and the screen.

What HD means on Putlocker

Every card carries the HD badge, and it means two things: the title exists in a proper high-definition release, and the services Watch now lists carry it that way. There is no CAM copy anywhere on the site. A film that opened in cinemas last week arrives here when it reaches a service in HD, which is the right moment to watch it anyway.

720p, 1080p and 4K

720p and 1080p are both high definition; 1080p is the full HD frame and 720p the smaller one, and the difference shows on a television and disappears on a phone. Recent films, prestige series and the newer animated features were finished at or near 4K, and on a large screen that tier is worth choosing, often with HDR, which widens the range of light and colour and is frequently the more visible upgrade. A film from 2004 was mastered in HD; its 4K stream is an upscale, and the money is better spent on the newer title beside it.

Which tier you get

The service decides the tier from three things: the title's best available master, the plan you are on, and the device. Most services play 1080p on any plan on a phone or laptop, and 4K on a 4K television on the plan that includes it. The title page here tells you what the title is; the service's own page, one press away on Watch now, tells you what it will play at on your screen.

Data and speed

HD needs roughly five megabits a second to play without buffering, and 4K needs twenty-five. On a data plan, HD uses one to three gigabytes an hour and 4K six to eight. On a metered connection choose HD, or download in the service's app over Wi-Fi first. If a stream buffers, drop the tier one step in the player and it will settle.

The old films

The classics people search for with the Putlocker name, Troy, Cast Away, Hackers, 28 Days Later, are all here in HD. Some were shot on film and scanned beautifully; 28 Days Later was shot on standard-definition video on purpose, and its HD release looks the way the film was meant to. The classics collection has the rest.
